Carpenter Ants: No Job for the Do-it-Yourselfer!
In West Michigan, the presence of large, black ants in your home generally means one thing; Carpenter Ants! Their size may range from 1/8” to 1/2” in length and may or may not have wings depending on their role in the nest. Carpenter ants construct two different kinds of nests; “parent” colonies, which are often in trees or stumps, and “satellite” colonies which often originate from the nearby parent colony. Nests in homes are usually satellite colonies. They may have a large number of worker ants but generally no queen, eggs, or larvae unless the parent nest has been disturbed. In the home, they prefer to nest in wood that has been damaged by moisture. They do not eat wood but excavate galleries in it. Most insecticides available to homeowners have little or no residual after application and their high odor may just scatter the nest. This is not a job for the inexperienced homeowner. Many pest control companies insist on a long, expensive contract with multiple visits to guarantee control. This is generally not necessary. Call today to discuss your many options.
